The Standing Committee of the Anglican Church of Australia has acted to investigate the doctrinal issues of blessing same-sex unions.
The committee noted at its November meeting that there was considerable discussion in the community about the appropriate response by the State to same-sex marriage. As this discussion would certainly continue next year, it seemed appropriate to consider the issues around the blessing by the Church of the Civil Union or Marriage of same sex people.
The committee approved a motion asking the Church’s Doctrine Commission to prepare a report for the committee on “the doctrinal issue concerning the blessing by the Church of the civil union or marriage of same-sex people.”
The position of the Anglican Church remains the one set out in the Book of Common Prayer, that marriage is between a man and a woman, under God, forsaking all others until death parts them.
